Walmart Agent Gateway: MCP for AI shopping agents, with caps
Walmart's Agent Gateway lets approved AI shopping agents search and buy over MCP, with Agent Profiles and spending caps. Amazon blocks them. Pick your side.
Amazon is blocking AI shopping agents. Walmart just built them a front door. On October 21 Walmart announced Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search its catalog and check out for customers, plus Agent Profiles that give each agent its own spending controls. The two biggest retailers in the country now disagree on whether agents are customers.
What actually happened
According to TechCrunch, Agent Gateway is built on the Model Context Protocol and covers Walmart and Sam's Club. An approved agent can search inventory and buy for the shopper without getting the shopper's full purchase history. Retail Insight Network describes the gateway as a developer beta for now.
Agent Profiles are due next month. The first time you shop through an agent, Walmart creates a profile for it inside your account. Its orders show up separately from yours. You choose whether it needs approval for every purchase or can buy within a spending limit you set, with $50, $100 and $200 tiers reported. Walmart compares it to adding an authorized user to a credit card. You can delete the profile at any time, and no Walmart+ membership is needed.
Walmart also published terms for agents. They cannot act beyond what the shopper intends, cannot access payment information, and get only the data the task needs. Agents that break the rules get blocked. Walmart's normal returns policy still applies when an agent gets an order wrong. Walmart already works with Meta's Muse and offers ChatGPT and Gemini integrations.
Why it matters for your business
Agents are a sales channel now, with rules. Walmart did not just allow agents. It defined what a good agent looks like and how it gets banned. Every store owner needs that same policy, even if it is one paragraph long.
Spending caps belong to the customer. Per-agent profiles, separate order history, approval by default. If you sell online, plan for agent orders you can tag, cap and refund on their own. A customer will dispute "my agent bought that" sooner than you think.
Your catalog has to be machine-readable. An agent searching over MCP reads your structured data, not your product photos. Clean titles, real attributes, accurate stock. That is your storefront for an agent shopper.
Blocking is a choice, too. Amazon's wall and Walmart's gateway are both agent policies. Decide yours on purpose.
