Yelp's AI agent will call your restaurant. Answer the bot

Yelp's Check for Me AI agent calls restaurants for wait times, and Smart Lead Reply answers quote requests for $30/month. What local businesses should set up now.

Yelp will soon send an AI agent to phone your restaurant. In its fall product release on October 20, Yelp announced Check for Me, a voice agent that calls a restaurant to ask about the wait and texts the answer back to the diner. In the same release, Yelp added Smart Lead Reply, a $30-a-month AI agent that answers quote requests for service businesses. The AI agent is now on both sides of the call. Your phone line and your lead inbox have to work for it.

What actually happened

Yelp listed more than 30 new features, including OpenTable booking inside Yelp Assistant on iOS. The ones that touch an operator:

  • Check for Me. A diner taps "Check wait time now" on a restaurant page and enters a party size and phone number. Yelp's AI phone agent calls the restaurant and texts the wait back "within minutes." It rolls out "in the coming months" on eligible restaurant pages in the U.S., on iOS. The release does not say if the agent tells staff that it is AI, or if a restaurant can opt out.
  • Smart Lead Reply. After a consumer sends a Request a Quote project, the agent answers questions, collects project details and qualifies the lead. Pros can load scheduling links, prices and promos. It rolls out next month at $30/month for eligible categories: movers, roofers, plumbers, cleaners, contractors, electricians and similar trades.
  • Pro integrations. Direct scheduling with ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro, lead sync with Jobber and Workiz. Yelp says about 10% of Request a Quote submissions in Q2 came through Yelp Assistant.

TechCrunch noted the obvious next problem. Many restaurants now answer with their own AI voice agent, Yelp's included. Soon two bots will talk to each other about a table for four.

Why it matters for your business

For a restaurant, the call from Check for Me is a diner who is deciding right now. If the phone rings out at 7 p.m., or the host says "not sure, maybe 20," the agent texts a vague answer and the diner goes next door. Your wait time is now data that a machine collects. If you use a waitlist tool, keep it current, because an AI host reads from it. If you have a voice agent on the line, test it with a short, scripted question from another bot.

For service pros, Smart Lead Reply is a speed-to-lead tool at a low price. The first business to answer a quote request often gets the job. $30/month is less than one missed roofing lead. The risk is in what you let it say. An agent that quotes the wrong price or books a slot you cannot cover costs more than it saves. Give it your real price ranges, a real calendar, and a clear handoff to a person.

One more point: Yelp blocks most outside AI agents from its own site, but it now sends its own agent into yours. The platforms decide which agents get in. Make sure your systems can answer the ones that bring customers.

Key takeaways

  • Yelp's Check for Me AI agent calls restaurants for wait times and texts diners; U.S. iOS rollout "in the coming months"
  • Yelp did not say if the agent discloses it is AI or if restaurants can opt out
  • Smart Lead Reply answers and qualifies Request a Quote leads for $30/month, starting next month
  • Keep your waitlist data current and test your phone line, human or AI, against a scripted bot call
  • Load any lead agent with real prices and a real calendar, and set a clear handoff to a person
