Amazon lets shoppers text Alexa to search, cart, and buy

Amazon's Alexa shopping agent now works over text message for select US customers. In SMS, shoppers see one or two products. Make yours the one.

Amazon just put its shopping agent in your customers' text messages. On November 6, Amazon said select US customers can now text Alexa to shop: search for items, add them to cart, and buy, all in plain language over SMS, per TechCrunch. It lands right before the holiday rush. And a text thread has no search results page. The agent picks, and the shopper sees a short answer.

What actually happened

Invited customers get a text asking them to turn the feature on. Everyone else can join a waitlist, and Amazon says the rollout widens in the coming weeks.

The texting agent builds on Alexa's recent shopping upgrades. Per TechCrunch, it can:

  • Search, add to cart, and complete a purchase
  • Manage lists and track prices
  • Search across the web and compare products
  • Check order status
  • Take a photo of an item, or of someone wearing an outfit, and find similar listings on Amazon

Amazon says Alexa will learn each shopper's preferences over time and suggest items to match.

The context matters. Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent from querying its site in September, and now it's shipping its own version of the same texting experience. DoorDash made the same call last month, saying third-party agents had placed only hundreds of orders total and that it would focus on its own text agent. The big platforms want the agent conversation to happen on their turf.

Why Alexa text shopping matters for your business

If you sell on Amazon, a new storefront just opened, and it's two lines wide. A shopper texts "waterproof hiking boots under $150, wide fit." Alexa answers with a pick or two. Nobody scrolls to page three in a text thread.

What decides whether that pick is yours:

  • Attributes the agent can match. Size, fit, material, compatibility, and use case in structured fields, not buried in a paragraph of bullets.
  • Images that work for photo search. Clean, accurate product shots on real people. A shopper's photo gets matched against yours.
  • Price and review signals. Price tracking is built in. If you're running holiday deals, the agent will notice, and so will the shopper it texts.

If you also sell direct, take the hint from Amazon and DoorDash: own your own agent channel. A text or chat assistant on your own catalog keeps the customer relationship and the data in your hands. We wrote about this pattern when Alexa for Shopping hit 350M users. Texting just makes the answer shorter.

Key takeaways

  • Select US customers can now text Alexa to search, add to cart, and buy on Amazon
  • Others can join a waitlist; Amazon says wider rollout comes in the coming weeks
  • The agent tracks prices, compares products, checks orders, and searches by photo
  • In a text thread, shoppers see one or two picks, so structured attributes decide who wins
  • Amazon and DoorDash are both favoring their own agents over third-party ones
