Amazon Shop Direct Merchant Workspace: free listing, no seller account
Amazon's Shop Direct Merchant Workspace lets eligible stores list in Amazon search and Alexa for Shopping for free. Buy for Me checks out on your site. Fix your feed.
You can now put your store in Amazon search without becoming an Amazon seller. Amazon launched the Shop Direct Merchant Workspace, a free, self-service portal where eligible merchants register for Shop Direct, submit a product feed and show up in relevant Amazon searches and inside Alexa for Shopping. Shoppers either click through to your site, or let Amazon's agent, Buy for Me, complete the order on your site for them. Until now, Shop Direct mostly ran through a handful of feed partners. Now any eligible store can sign itself up.
What actually happened
Per Amazon's announcement:
- Three-step sign-up. Create a Shop Direct merchant account, verify your business website, then share your catalog through a solution provider or directly through Amazon's Selling Partner API.
- Existing feeds work. The workspace accepts "widely adopted shopping feed formats." Named providers are Feedonomics, Salsify, CEDCommerce and VersaFeed.
- No fees, opt out any time. Amazon says there are no fees to participate. You pick which items to include.
- You keep the operations. Inventory, pricing, fulfillment, returns and customer service stay with you. Amazon says its "AI connector" gives shoppers near real-time product information.
- Buy for Me. On eligible products, the shopper confirms address, taxes, shipping and payment on Amazon, then "Amazon's AI then securely completes the purchase from the merchant's website."
- Reach. Shop Direct is available to all U.S. customers on Amazon.com, the Amazon Shopping app, mobile web and Alexa for Shopping. Amazon says Shop Direct products appear in "hundreds of millions of searches monthly."
What Amazon did not publish: the eligibility rules, how Shop Direct items rank against paying sellers, or any merchant count. Retail Insight Network adds no numbers beyond Amazon's.
Why it matters for your business
This is free distribution with a catch you should see clearly. Amazon is not sending you a customer. It is sending you an order that its agent placed. When Buy for Me checks out, the shopper never sees your site, your upsell or your email capture. You still eat the fulfillment, the returns and the support ticket.
That trade can still be worth it. Here is how we would run it:
- Fix the feed first. Your feed is now your Amazon listing. Wrong price, stale stock or a vague title becomes a bad order your team has to unwind. Audit it before you submit.
- Start with a slice. Pick items with clean data and healthy margin. Leave out anything with fit or sizing problems that drive returns.
- Tag the traffic. Make sure agent orders are marked in your order system so you can measure return rate and repeat rate apart from direct buyers.
- Watch your bot wall. An agent that checks out on your site can trip your bot protection. Test one Buy for Me order end to end.

Your product feed is now a storefront on someone else's platform. Rush Commerce cleans catalog data, wires agent orders into your order system with their own tags, and measures what each channel actually earns. See how we build commerce systems you own or send us your feed and we will tell you what an agent would get wrong.
