Anthropic Junk Credit Rating Forecast: Don't Prepay Your AI Vendor

Blackstone now expects Anthropic to get a high junk credit rating after its IPO, not investment grade. What AI vendor credit risk means for your contracts.

Blackstone now expects Anthropic to get a "junk" credit rating after its IPO, the Financial Times reported, as covered by TechCrunch. Earlier, Blackstone told investors Anthropic would be investment grade before 2027. That forecast is gone. If Claude runs part of your business, an AI vendor's credit rating is now a line item in your risk review, not just a Wall Street story.

What actually happened

Blackstone is the anchor investor in a $63 billion deal to finance Anthropic's chips. Per the FT, it told investors in that deal it now expects Anthropic to land in the "double B" range. That is the top tier of speculative grade, one step below investment grade. Earlier, Blackstone had said the opposite.

It is a forecast, not a rating. TechCrunch notes no agency has issued a post-IPO grade yet. Anthropic and Blackstone both declined to comment. A junk rating makes debt more expensive, and Anthropic needs a lot of it to pay for compute. The company publicly filed its S-1 earlier this week.

Anthropic is not the only AI company borrowing against hardware. Amazon disclosed a secured loan facility of up to $80 billion, backed by hardware-related assets, to help fund AI, Bloomberg reported. The AI build-out runs on debt now.

Why AI vendor credit risk matters for your business

Nothing changes on your API key tomorrow. Claude still works. But when a vendor's cost of money goes up, it has three levers: raise prices, cut free tiers and rate limits, or cut products. We have watched all three happen across the industry this year.

So treat the model like any other critical supplier with a leveraged balance sheet:

  • Don't prepay a year of credits you can't use or refund. Pay monthly or buy in small blocks.
  • Keep the model behind one interface. One adapter file in your code, not Claude calls spread through 40 files. Then a switch is a config change.
  • Keep a tested fallback. Run your top prompts against a second provider each quarter and keep the results. You want proof, not a hope, that the fallback works.
  • Own your prompts and evals. They live in your repo. They move with you.

A high junk rating is not a default. Plenty of companies run for decades in that range. The point is that "this vendor will always be cheap and always be there" is not a plan.

Key takeaways

  • Per the FT, Blackstone now expects Anthropic to get a high junk ("double B") rating after its IPO, reversing an investment-grade forecast
  • Blackstone anchors a $63 billion chip-financing deal for Anthropic; no agency has issued a post-IPO rating yet
  • Amazon also lined up a hardware-backed loan facility of up to $80 billion for AI
  • For your business: no prepaid annual credits, one model interface, a tested fallback provider, prompts in your repo

Your AI stack should survive your vendor's next financing round. We build model-agnostic systems with a single provider interface and a tested fallback, so a price change is a config edit. See how we build or tell us which models you run on.
