ChatGPT Sponsored Agents: ads that answer back
OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT and shipped a ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store. Your ad is now a conversation you have to staff.
OpenAI announced a batch of advertising changes today, and one of them is a different product category wearing an ad's clothes. ChatGPT Sponsored Agents let a shopper click your ad and then keep talking — to an agent you sponsor, inside ChatGPT, about your business. The other change is more immediately practical: there is now a ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store.
What actually happened
OpenAI's announcement covers three things.
Sponsored Agents. After clicking an ad in ChatGPT, a user can start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent. They explain what they actually want, ask follow-ups, and follow a link to your site when they are ready. The conversation is kept separate from ChatGPT's own answers and from the thread the user was already in. It is in test with selected advertisers in the United States.
Natural-language campaign and creative tools. Advertisers get suggested copy and imagery generated from their landing page and campaign objective. Headlines and descriptions can adapt to conversation context and translate into the user's language — and the advertiser controls whether that adaptation is on.
CRM and ecommerce integrations. OpenAI describes HubSpot and Shopify as its first partnerships of this kind. HubSpot users can connect a ChatGPT Ads account to build campaigns, track performance and follow up on leads. US Shopify merchants can install a ChatGPT Ads app from the Shopify App Store today; because products already flow through Shopify Catalog, campaigns can run against the existing feed. International availability follows later this month in markets where ChatGPT Ads operates.
Why ChatGPT Sponsored Agents matter for your business
An ad that answers questions is a support channel with a media budget. A static ad fails cheaply — nobody clicks. A Sponsored Agent fails expensively: it answers wrong about your lead time, your return policy, or whether you service a ZIP code, and the customer believes it, because you sponsored it. Before you buy this format, decide who owns what the agent is allowed to say, and where those facts live. If the answer is "a PDF someone updated in March," you are not ready.
Your product data is the creative now. The Shopify path works because the catalog is already there. That makes feed hygiene an ad-performance problem, not a back-office chore. Wrong variants, stale stock, missing dimensions, thin descriptions — that is your ad copy, generated from your landing page. Merchants with clean, structured product data get a running start. Everyone else pays for impressions against bad inputs.
The Shopify App Store install is the easiest thing here and the easiest thing to get wrong. One click, existing catalog, campaigns live. Set a hard budget cap and a conversion definition before you turn it on, and instrument the traffic on your own side. If your only view of performance is the dashboard belonging to the company selling the inventory, you cannot tell a good channel from an expensive one.
Two vendors now sit between you and the buyer. ChatGPT owns the surface, Shopify owns the catalog pipe, and you own neither. That is fine as a channel and dangerous as a foundation. Keep your product data canonical in a system you control and syndicate outward. The same feed should be able to serve a different answer engine next year without a migration project.
Key takeaways
- OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents — clearly labeled, business-sponsored conversations a user can start after clicking a ChatGPT ad — with selected US advertisers
- Sponsored Agent chats stay separate from ChatGPT's own answers and from the user's original thread
- New AI creative tools suggest copy and imagery from your landing page and objective, and can adapt headlines to context and language, with an advertiser toggle
- HubSpot and Shopify are OpenAI's first CRM and ecommerce integrations for ChatGPT Ads
- US Shopify merchants can install a ChatGPT Ads app from the Shopify App Store now, running against products already in Shopify Catalog; international availability follows later in September
- Product-data quality becomes ad quality — the catalog and landing page are the creative inputs
- Instrument conversions on your own infrastructure rather than trusting only the ad platform's dashboard
If an agent is going to speak for your store, it should read from a source you own. We build canonical product data and clean feeds that syndicate to whatever answer layer matters this quarter — plus conversion tracking you control. See what we've built for merchants, or send us your catalog and we'll audit the feed.
