Cowork merges into Claude: Docs and Slides ship in beta

Anthropic killed the tab. As of September 16, Claude Cowork and Claude chat are one product, and two new beta features — Claude Docs and Claude Slides — ship inside the conversation. If your team has been asking which window to open for which job, that question is now answered by the model instead of by the person.

What actually happened

Per Anthropic's announcement, Cowork and chat merged into a single Claude. There is no mode to select. You describe the work, and Claude decides whether it is a two-line answer or a multi-step job that runs after you shut the laptop.

Three things are new and in beta on paid plans: Claude Docs (draft, edit inline, comment), Claude Slides (build a deck, present it, export to PowerPoint or PDF), and Claude Design now running inside normal conversations rather than as its own surface. TechCrunch reports the stated reason plainly: customers struggled to choose the right tab, and work started in one place did not carry to the other.

Rollout is Pro and Max first, across web, desktop, and mobile, over the coming weeks. Team and Free follow. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice before the change reaches their org.

Why the merge matters for your business

Tab-picking was friction, but it was also a control. Choosing "Cowork" was an explicit decision to let an agent run long, touch files, and keep going unattended. That decision now happens inside a router you do not see. For most teams this is a net win — fewer people stuck in the wrong tool, fewer half-finished tasks stranded in a context that cannot reach the rest. For anyone with a compliance story to tell, it is a change worth writing down.

Two practical moves this week. First, if you are on Enterprise, the 30-day notice is your window to decide what "Claude runs this unattended" means in your environment before it becomes the default path. Use it. Second, if your team has been exporting Claude output into Google Docs or PowerPoint by hand, that loop is now internal — go find the person doing the copy-paste and give them something better to do.

The broader read: Anthropic is compressing separate surfaces into one assistant. That is convenient, and it is also consolidation. The more of your document, deck, and design work lives inside one vendor's beta features, the more your workflow is shaped by their roadmap.
