DigitalOcean Cuttlefish: approve AI agent actions from iPhone
DigitalOcean's Cuttlefish iPhone app lets you watch AI agent runs, approve or deny tool calls, and stop a session. Decide what needs approval first.
The approval button for your AI agents now lives in your pocket. DigitalOcean launched Cuttlefish, a native iPhone app to supervise AI agents running on its Managed Agents platform. You watch a session live, approve or deny each tool call, and redirect or kill the run from wherever you are. The phone part is easy. The hard part is deciding which actions should wait for you.
What actually happened
DigitalOcean announced Cuttlefish on November 5 at BoxWorks. Per the press release and DigitalOcean's launch post:
- Live sessions. Replies, reasoning and tool calls stream to the phone as the agent works.
- Real approvals. You approve or deny a tool call with the full command, file path or diff in front of you, not a summary. Requests classified as high risk need Face ID or your passcode.
- Control. You can send a correction, pause, resume or stop a run. Push notifications fire when a run needs approval, finishes or fails.
- Bring your harness. It supports Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, OpenHands, Hermes, LangGraph and CrewAI.
- Runs in the cloud. Sessions live in DigitalOcean MicroVMs, not on the phone, and DigitalOcean says billing follows active CPU use, so time spent waiting on you costs little.
Box is the launch partner. Box Mount syncs a Box folder into each agent session, with Box's permissions, version history and audit trail applied to every change. Two caveats: Managed Agents is in public preview, and Box Mount is in private preview. DigitalOcean's own release says preview services aren't supported for production workloads. We couldn't find a published price for the app.
Why AI agent approvals matter for your business
Most small teams that try agents hit the same wall. The agent is fast, but nobody trusts it to push a change, send an email or touch a customer record alone. So someone babysits a laptop. A phone approval queue removes the babysitting. It doesn't remove the judgment.
The risk flips, too. If every tool call pings your phone, you'll tap "approve" by reflex within a week. That's worse than no gate at all. Before you turn this on, write the rules down:
- List the actions that need a human. Anything that spends money, emails a customer, deletes data or deploys to production.
- Let the rest run. Reading files, drafting, running tests. Approving those trains you to stop reading.
- Scope the data. If you use Box Mount, point the agent at one folder, not the whole drive.
We wrote about the cost side when DigitalOcean shipped Agent Droplets. Same principle here: set the limits before the agent runs, not after.
Key takeaways
- Cuttlefish is a native iPhone app for DigitalOcean Managed Agents, launched November 5
- You approve or deny tool calls with the full command or diff; high-risk calls need Face ID
- Works with Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, OpenHands, Hermes, LangGraph and CrewAI
- Managed Agents is in public preview; Box Mount is in private preview
- Approve only the actions that matter, or approval turns into a reflex
Want agents with a real approval gate? We build AI agent workflows with written rules for what runs alone and what waits for a human, on infrastructure you own. See how we build, or tell us which task you'd hand off first.
