Holiday ecommerce hits $317B, growing 2x total retail

Deloitte forecasts $316.1B to $318.9B in holiday ecommerce, up 7.5% to 8.4%. Salesforce predicts 20% of that traffic arrives from AI agents. Plan for both.

Deloitte published its 2026 holiday retail forecast on September 10, and the split inside it is the number worth planning against. Holiday ecommerce is forecast at $316.1 billion to $318.9 billion, up 7.5% to 8.4% year over year — roughly double the growth rate of holiday retail overall. If you sell online, your channel is not just growing, it is taking share during the one window where a bad week costs you a quarter.

What actually happened

Deloitte's forecast covers November 2026 through January 2027. Total holiday retail sales land between $1.70 trillion and $1.71 trillion, a 4.0% to 4.8% increase over the same period a year earlier. Ecommerce takes the $316.1B to $318.9B slice at nearly twice that growth rate. Deloitte credits continued consumer use of digital tools for research and comparison shopping, and describes a shopper who still wants to make the holiday special while being deliberate about spend.

The more operationally interesting number comes from a vendor, so read it as a directional claim rather than a measurement. Salesforce's 2026 holiday predictions put 20% of holiday ecommerce traffic as originating from AI chat agents — a mix of consumer-facing assistants, autonomous agents doing back-end work, and systems scraping competitors for price matching. Salesforce also predicts retailers will spend an additional $3 billion globally subsidizing free shipping, a 7% increase over last holiday, and says 50% of shoppers now use an AI assistant somewhere in the buying journey, up 67% year over year.

Why agent traffic matters for your ecommerce business

One-fifth of your holiday traffic arriving from something that does not have eyes changes what you optimize. An agent does not see your hero image, your badge row, or the trust seals in your footer. It reads structured data, and it reads it fast. That means your product feed, your schema markup, your variant-level availability, and your returns policy in machine-readable form are now conversion surface. If your price lives only in a JavaScript-rendered widget and your stock status is a colored dot, you are invisible to the fastest-growing referrer in the forecast.

Check three things before Cyber Week. First, does your product schema carry price, currency, availability, GTIN, and shipping cost per variant — not just the parent product? Second, does your site return complete content without JavaScript execution? Curl your own product page and read what comes back. Third, are you logging agent traffic separately from human traffic and from bot traffic you block? You cannot manage a channel you are lumping into "other."

Then look at the shipping number. A $3 billion industry-wide subsidy increase is the same margin pressure landing on your P&L in miniature. If agents are comparison-shopping on delivered cost, free shipping stops being a differentiator and becomes table stakes priced into your COGS. Know your delivered margin per SKU before you set a promotional threshold, because the machine reading your page will do that math instantly and it will not be charmed by your brand.

Key takeaways

  • Deloitte forecasts holiday ecommerce at $316.1B–$318.9B, up 7.5%–8.4% for November 2026 through January 2027
  • Total holiday retail: $1.70T–$1.71T, up 4.0%–4.8% — ecommerce grows at roughly double that rate
  • Salesforce predicts 20% of holiday ecommerce traffic will come from AI chat agents (vendor prediction, not measurement)
  • Salesforce also projects an extra $3B in global free-shipping subsidy, up 7% year over year
  • Agent traffic reads structured data, not design — audit schema markup, variant-level availability, and no-JavaScript rendering
  • Segment agent traffic in analytics now, and know delivered margin per SKU before setting free-shipping thresholds

Agents read your product feed, not your homepage. We audit and rebuild product data layers so structured markup, variant availability, and delivered cost are correct and machine-readable before peak season — then instrument the traffic so you can tell which channel actually paid. Run the numbers on what a fixed feed is worth, or send us your product page and we'll tell you what an agent sees.
