Malachyte raises $10M. Your clickstream is the asset.

Ex-Spotify engineers raised $10M to bring real-time behavioral recommendations to ecommerce. The signal they use is data most stores already throw away.

Three engineers who built Spotify's recommendation infrastructure raised $10 million to point the same machinery at ecommerce. The company is Malachyte, and the interesting part is not the model. It is the input: hovers, scroll depth, search refinements, and device context — first-party behavioral data that most stores generate every day and then discard.

What actually happened

Per TechCrunch and the company's announcement:

  • $10M seed, co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with Harpoon Ventures participating.
  • Founded by Sidd Motwani (CEO), Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha. The company says the team built the behavioral intelligence layer behind 90%+ of Spotify's recommendations across 800M+ users.
  • The product reads real-time session behavior — clicks, hovers, searches, scrolling — plus context like device type and time of day, and predicts intent without login or purchase history.
  • Launched with Fun.com in fall 2025; generally available to Shopify merchants through a native integration since June 2026. Larger retailers integrate by API.
  • Company-reported customer results include +31% revenue per visitor at HalloweenCostumes.com and an 80% lift in add-to-cart click-through at Brunt Workwear. Treat vendor-published lift numbers as vendor-published lift numbers.

Why first-party data matters for your business

The no-login claim is the pitch. Most personalization stacks need identity — an account, an email, a purchase history. Anonymous first-time traffic gets the default merchandising grid. If intent can be inferred from twenty seconds of scroll and one search refinement, the segment you have been writing off becomes addressable. That is a real gap, and it is worth testing against your current baseline rather than assuming.

The signal is the durable asset. The ranker is not. Malachyte, its competitors, and whatever Shopify ships natively next year all consume the same thing: a clean event stream of what shoppers did on your site. If you are capturing that stream into infrastructure you own, swapping ranking vendors is a weekend. If the vendor's script is the only place those events exist, you are renting your own customer behavior back at their renewal price.

Instrument before you buy. Product views, search queries and refinements, filter usage, scroll depth on PDPs, add-to-cart and abandon events, with a stable anonymous session ID. That is a few days of work and it makes every personalization vendor evaluable — because you can compute the counterfactual yourself.

Key takeaways

  • Malachyte raised $10M seed co-led by Bessemer and Gradient to bring Spotify-style recommendations to ecommerce
  • It infers intent from live session behavior — no login, no purchase history required
  • Available to Shopify merchants via native integration since June 2026; API for larger retailers
  • Reported lifts (+31% revenue per visitor, +80% add-to-cart CTR) are company-published, not independently verified
  • Own the event stream, not the ranker — the clickstream outlives every personalization vendor
  • Instrument search, filter, scroll, and cart events before you evaluate anyone

Every personalization vendor wants your behavioral data. Keep a copy. We build first-party event pipelines that land in your warehouse first and feed vendors second — so you can measure the lift, and leave without losing the history. See how we build it, or tell us what you're capturing today and we'll show you the gaps.
