Profound's $180M Series D: AI search visibility is a budget line

Profound raised $180M at a $1.8B valuation for answer engine optimization. What a 7-month valuation double says about where your discovery traffic is going.

Answer engine optimization just got priced like a category, not a feature. Profound raised a $180M Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation on September 15 — roughly double the $1B it carried seven months ago. The product does one thing: tell brands how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity describe them, and what to change. Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins co-led. If you sell anything online, the interesting part is not the round. It is that a seven-month valuation double means the buyers are already there.

What actually happened

Bloomberg reported the $180M Series D co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, with Lightspeed, Khosla Ventures and South Park Commons returning. Total raised is now north of $335M for a company founded in 2024.

Per TechCrunch, the operating numbers behind it:

  • Revenue up 3x in the past six months
  • 1,000+ enterprise customers, including Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies and Walmart
  • The Series C — $96M at $1B — closed in February 2026, seven months earlier

The company started as an analytics platform and turned into marketing software for a channel that did not have a name two years ago. We covered Profound's Aim agent in July when the pitch was monitoring. The pitch now is a line item.

Why AI search visibility matters for your business

Walmart and Estée Lauder are paying to find out what a model says about them. That is the signal. Not the valuation — the fact that companies with functioning SEO teams decided the existing stack could not answer the question. If enterprises with in-house analytics are buying, the small shop guessing from ChatGPT screenshots is not measuring anything.

You do not need a $1.8B vendor to start. You need a repeatable test. Pick your twenty highest-intent buying questions — "best X for Y under $Z," the comparison against your named competitor, the "is X legit" query. Run them monthly against ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Log what gets cited and what gets said about you. That is a spreadsheet and an afternoon, and it gives you a baseline before you buy a platform to watch it for you.

The fix is usually on your own site. Models cite pages that answer the question in plain text near the top: specs, prices, comparisons, returns policy, who it is not for. If your product page hides that behind a tab, a carousel or a JavaScript render, you are invisible to the thing your buyer is asking. That is not an AEO subscription. That is a content and markup problem you already own.

Watch the dependency. Every dollar you put into ranking inside someone else's answer box is a dollar spent on rented land — the same trade SEO made with Google, at faster compounding. Track the share of orders that start in an AI assistant, and make sure email, SMS and repeat purchase are growing alongside it.

Key takeaways

  • Profound raised $180M at $1.8B on September 15, co-led by Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins
  • Valuation doubled in seven months; revenue up 3x in six months; 1,000+ enterprise customers
  • Comcast, Estée Lauder and Walmart buying AEO tooling means their own SEO stacks could not answer the question
  • Start with a manual baseline: 20 buying questions, four assistants, logged monthly
  • Most AI visibility fixes are on-site — plain-text specs, prices and comparisons above the fold
  • Treat answer-engine placement as rented land; grow owned channels at the same rate
