Zest AI restaurant agent books tables over text: OpenTable, Resy
Zest launched an AI restaurant concierge that books via OpenTable, Resy and SevenRooms over text. Your reservation system is now an agent channel.
Restaurant discovery app Zest launched an AI restaurant concierge that lives in your text messages. It recommends places, sends menus, checks availability and books the table. It books through OpenTable, Resy and SevenRooms. For a restaurant owner, that means an AI agent is now choosing between you and the place down the street, and it reads your reservation data to decide.
What actually happened
According to TechCrunch, you text a number and the agent does the work. It filters by cuisine, occasion, dietary needs or neighborhood. It answers questions such as how busy a place is or whether it has Wi-Fi. Add it to a group chat and it blends everyone's tastes, runs a vote in the thread and books for the group.
The recommendations come from data. Zest's main app links to a user's cards through Plaid and uses only food and drink transactions to map where people actually eat. CEO Mario Gomez-Hall told TechCrunch the company plans to earn money from bookings and, later, food ordering. His line: "The agent is the product now."
The scale is small. TechCrunch says Zest has "thousands of users" and raised a $1.8 million pre-seed from Alexis Ohanian's 776 and Kindred Ventures. Pricing for users and supported cities were not stated. The concierge was in testing last month and shipped once booking worked.
Why the AI restaurant agent matters for your business
Your booking platform is your storefront for agents. Zest does not call the host stand. It reads availability from OpenTable, Resy or SevenRooms and books. If your tables are not in one of those systems, or the inventory there is stale, the agent cannot pick you.
Bad data costs covers. An agent that books a "quiet" spot that turns out loud, or a table that does not exist, sends the next request somewhere else. Keep menus, hours, dietary tags and table inventory current in the systems agents read. Zest is one startup. The same pattern runs through Google, OpenAI and every assistant that adds booking.
Watch the fees before they show up. Zest says it will make money on bookings and orders. Agent-sourced covers will carry a cost somewhere in the chain. Tag where each reservation came from now, so you can price that channel when the bill arrives.
