Reddit's login wall: Google AI Mode cut referrals 1M a week

Reddit says Google AI Mode cut search referrals by 1M+ a week in October, so it will test a login wall. What AI search does to your organic traffic.

Reddit reported Q3 2026 on Thursday and beat on revenue. Then CEO Steve Huffman said the quiet part on the call: Google AI Mode is eating its search referrals, down more than one million a week on average in October. Reddit's answer is a login wall. For a site that let anyone browse without an account for two decades, that is a big bet. For a small business that lives on organic search, it is a warning.

What actually happened

Per Reuters, Reddit posted Q3 revenue of $895 million, up 53% and ahead of the $878.4 million analyst average. The traffic numbers were worse. US daily active uniques fell 2% to 50.7 million, the first decline since Reddit went public in 2024.

Huffman blamed Google's AI search features. His line on the call: "the AI mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody." He also said Google is "crawling us as hard as ever." So demand for Reddit's content is the same. The clicks are not.

Huffman warned that total daily active uniques could fall by a low double-digit percentage in Q4 from about 130 million if referrals keep dropping. Reddit will test a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the US in Q4, to push visitors to sign up and to deter scraping. Logged-in users make up "over 80% of the monetization," he said. Q4 adjusted EBITDA guidance of $480–510 million came in under the $512.2 million estimate, and the stock fell sharply in extended trading.

In July, we wrote about Reddit's Q2, when referrals were only "choppy." One quarter later, they have a number.

Why Google AI Mode traffic loss matters for your business

Reddit has 130 million daily users, licensing deals with Google and OpenAI, and its own app. It still cannot hold its search traffic. If your store or service business gets most of its new visitors from Google, you are on the same curve with less cushion.

Reddit's fix is the right shape: turn anonymous visitors into known ones. You do not need a login wall. You need an email or SMS capture that is worth the trade, an account that saves something useful (reorders, quotes, appointment history), and a way to measure how much of your traffic is still "rented" from a search engine. Do the work while the referrals still arrive. Do not wait until they stop.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit says Google search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average in October; Huffman blamed AI Mode
  • US daily active uniques fell 2% to 50.7 million, the first drop since the 2024 IPO
  • Reddit will test a logged-in-only experience outside the US in Q4; logged-in users drive over 80% of monetization
  • Your move: convert search visitors into owned contacts now, and track the share of traffic that depends on Google

Most of your traffic still comes from Google? We build the owned side: customer accounts, email and SMS capture, and the analytics that show how much of your traffic is rented. Run the numbers with our ROI calculator, or talk to us.
