Shopify Campaign Autopilot now buys ads inside Copilot

Shopify added Microsoft Advertising to Campaign Autopilot, so budget auto-shifts into Performance Max — including Copilot placements. Keep your own attribution.

A quiet changelog entry moved real money this month. Campaign Autopilot — Shopify's automated ad buyer — can now run Microsoft Advertising alongside its existing channels, and it will shift your budget between them on its own. The line that matters for merchants: Microsoft's Performance Max inventory includes Copilot placements. Your ad spend now reaches shoppers who are asking an AI assistant instead of typing into a search box, and an algorithm decides how much goes there.

What actually happened

Shopify's changelog entry on August 4 says Microsoft Advertising is available as a channel in Campaign Autopilot, in early access, from the Growth tab in the Shopify admin. You can create a new Microsoft Advertising account or connect one you already have. Autopilot then runs Performance Max campaigns there and distributes budget across channels based on performance.

Performance Max is the relevant detail. Per Microsoft Advertising, it is a single automated campaign type that spans Search, the Microsoft Audience Network, and Shopping inventory — including Copilot placements. The Audience Network itself covers native and display across MSN, Outlook, Edge, and partner publisher sites.

Stack those two facts and the shape is clear. One toggle in Shopify hands budget allocation to Shopify's optimizer, which hands placement to Microsoft's optimizer, which serves inside an AI assistant. Two layers of automation between your money and the impression.

Why Campaign Autopilot matters for your business

This is a genuinely useful feature, and we would turn it on. Small merchants have never had a reasonable path into Microsoft's inventory — the account setup alone killed most attempts, and Bing gets dismissed by people who have not looked at its conversion rates lately. Removing that friction is worth something.

Turn it on with three things already in place.

Your own attribution, before the test starts. Autopilot reports on Autopilot. If the only performance data you have comes from the system deciding where to spend, you cannot tell whether Microsoft earned the shift or the optimizer just found cheaper clicks. Server-side order tagging, a first-party session record, and a pre-period baseline. Do it before you enable the channel, not after the first surprising invoice.

A floor and a ceiling per channel. "Distributes budget based on performance" is a phrase that means the split will move without asking you. Early-access optimizers are also learning on your money. Decide now what the most you will spend on an unproven channel in a month is.

A product feed built for machines. Copilot placements are answers, not banners. The listing that wins is the one with complete, structured, unambiguous product data — real titles, real attributes, real availability. We have said this on every agentic-commerce post for a year and it keeps being the same fix: the catalog is the ad creative now. A weak feed does not underperform gracefully in these surfaces. It disappears.

The bigger read: assistant surfaces have stopped being a 2027 planning item and become a line in a Shopify admin toggle. The merchants who benefit are the ones whose product data was already clean and whose numbers are their own.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify added Microsoft Advertising to Campaign Autopilot on August 4, in early access, from the Growth tab
  • Autopilot runs Performance Max there and shifts budget across channels based on performance
  • Microsoft's Performance Max spans Search, the Audience Network, and Shopping inventory — including Copilot placements
  • Set up first-party attribution and a pre-period baseline before you enable the channel
  • Set a per-channel floor and ceiling; an early-access optimizer is learning on your budget
  • In assistant placements the product feed is the creative — incomplete catalogs don't underperform, they vanish

Automated bidding is fine. Automated measurement is not. We build merchants a first-party attribution layer and a structured product feed that reads cleanly in AI answer surfaces — so you can tell what the optimizer actually bought. Model the spend first or talk to us about your catalog.
