Shopify promoted placements: AI agents get paid to show products
Shopify's promoted placements pay AI agent developers 0.3% base commission, more via Shop Campaigns. What merchants and agent builders should check first.
Shopify now pays AI agent developers to show certain products. Promoted placements is a new Developer Preview in Shopify's Global Catalog: agents that opt in get commission-paying products blended into their search results, and they earn a cut when a shopper buys. Agentic commerce just got its first ad layer, and merchants pay for it through Shop Campaigns.
What actually happened
The details are in Shopify's developer documentation for promoted placements. The short version:
- Status: Developer Preview, invite-only through a waitlist. Shopify says field names, behavior and commission rates can change before general availability.
- Base commission: 0.3% (30 basis points) on attributed purchases of eligible products. It applies to every eligible item in the order, not only the clicked one.
- Merchant-funded boost: Merchants running Shop Campaigns can add commission on top of the base rate. Shopify's example shows a total of 1.5%. That boost applies only to active US campaigns in USD, and only when the buyer completes checkout in the Shop app or on shop.com. A purchase on the merchant's own storefront earns only the base 0.3%.
- Attribution: last non-direct click, 7-day window. Agents must send buyers through the catalog's
urlorcheckout_url. Cart flows that add variant IDs don't carry attribution yet. - In the API: promoted variants carry a
placementobject withtype: "affiliate"and the total commission percentage. Organic results don't. - Disclosure: Shopify tells developers to label promoted results and disclose the commission prominently, not in a footer. It doesn't prescribe wording.
What the docs don't say: whether a higher commission moves a product up the results. Shopify says only that server-side catalog configuration decides whether promoted items get blended in.
Why it matters for your business
If you sell on Shopify, AI agents are becoming a sales channel with a pay-to-play tier. Two things follow.
Your Shop Campaigns budget now reaches agents. If you already run Shop Campaigns, check whether external platforms are switched on and what that does to your effective cost per order. A higher commission on a sale that would have happened anyway is margin you gave away.
The boost pushes buyers to Shop, not to your store. The higher rate pays only when checkout happens in Shop or on shop.com. That's good for Shopify's network and less good for your first-party data and email list. Decide on purpose whether that trade is worth it.
If you're building a shopping agent: the 0.3% is real money at volume, but the disclosure duty is yours. Label promoted results in the UI, and talk to counsel before you ship.
Key takeaways
- Shopify's promoted placements blend commission-paying products into AI agent catalog results (Developer Preview)
- Agents earn 0.3% base commission; merchants can add more through US Shop Campaigns
- The higher rate pays only on Shop app or shop.com checkouts, with a 7-day last-click window
- Shopify doesn't say whether higher commission ranks a product higher
- Merchants: audit Shop Campaigns settings; agent builders: label and disclose promoted results
