TikTok Must Eat: a restaurant guide built from 40M posts
TikTok's Must Eat restaurant guide launches in NYC, LA and SF with OpenTable booking. What local restaurants should fix before it reaches their city.
TikTok launched Must Eat, a restaurant guide built from what people post on the app. It starts in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and select restaurants can be booked through OpenTable without leaving TikTok. For restaurant owners, that's a new discovery channel that ranks you on what customers film, not on what you write in your Google profile.
What actually happened
Per TechCrunch's report and TikTok's announcement:
- Source data: TikTok says Must Eat draws on more than 40 million posts and comments, plus curated lists.
- Launch cities: New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. No dates for other cities.
- Browsing: by city, with filters for cuisine, price, rating and location.
- Two buckets: "Everyday Eats" for casual and neighborhood spots, and "Elevated Dining" for occasions and nights out.
- Booking: select restaurants take reservations inside TikTok through OpenTable.
- Where it shows up: search, the Local feed, restaurant pages, and location links on videos from participating restaurants.
What nobody has said yet: how a restaurant gets in, whether owners can claim or edit a listing, or whether paid ads affect placement. TikTok's announcement doesn't cover it, and neither does the coverage. We won't guess.
Why it matters for your business
This puts TikTok in the same lane as Yelp and Google Maps, with one difference: the ranking input is video your customers already made. You can't fill out a form to be a Must Eat. You can make it easy for people to post about you, and make sure those posts point to the right place.
Three things to do now, even if you're not in New York, LA or SF:
- Tag your location correctly. Check that your TikTok business account and your videos link to one accurate place page. Duplicate or misspelled locations split your posts.
- Get on OpenTable if you take reservations. It's the only booking partner named so far. A diner who can't book in the app goes to someone who can.
- Watch what's being said. If 40 million comments feed the ranking, your comment section is now part of your listing. Answer the bad ones.
Phoenix isn't on the list yet. That's the window to fix the basics before it is.
