Canva Craft image model: on-brand graphics, own the template
Canva Craft, Canva's first image generation model, renders legible text at 2K and ships in the Canva API. Here's how to use it without losing your brand.
Canva just shipped its own image generation model, and it was trained on layouts, not photos. TechCrunch reported on October 22 that the Canva Craft image model is live for all Canva users in Dream Lab and available through the Canva API. For a small business that makes its menus, promo posts and product cards in Canva, that is a real change: the model aims at the exact graphics you already make by hand, text included.
What actually happened
Per TechCrunch, Canva Craft is Canva's first in-house image model, built with help from the Leonardo.ai team Canva acquired in 2024. The details that matter:
- Two-stage generation. The model first plans the layout (where elements go, their scale, the visual hierarchy, the text content) and then renders the image.
- Trained on human-designed templates. Posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and type-heavy layouts from Canva's library, not stock photography.
- Legible text and targeted edits. Output goes up to 2K resolution across up to 30 aspect ratios, and Canva says edits change only what you ask for.
- Editable output. Images can be converted into layered designs with Canva Magic, so a generated poster becomes something you can actually adjust.
- Where it runs. Dream Lab for every user, the Canva API for developers, and, at some unannounced date, ChatGPT and Gemini through Canva's MCP server.
Two faster, cheaper variants are in development, with no release date. TechCrunch did not report pricing or plan limits, and we found no Canva post with them. Treat cost as unknown until Canva publishes it.
Why it matters for your business
Text was the reason most image generators were useless for small-business marketing. A model that gets the price, the hours and the headline right is a model you can actually put in a workflow.
Your template is the asset, not the prompt. If anyone on your team can prompt a poster, the thing that keeps your brand consistent is the layered template, the colors and the type rules. Keep those in your own brand kit and make the model work inside them.
The API path is the interesting one. A Shopify product update or a new menu item could trigger a Canva API call and produce on-brand social graphics with no one opening an editor. That is a small automation with a clear payoff, as long as a person approves the post before it goes live.
Wait for the price sheet before you scale. Unknown per-image cost plus an automated trigger is how a marketing bill surprises you.
