ChatGPT Ads: your product feed is now an ad channel
Pattern added ChatGPT Ads to its campaign platform alongside Google, Meta and TikTok. The channel runs on product feeds — which means your catalog is the creative.
Pattern Group (NASDAQ: PTRN) announced this week that it added ChatGPT Ads to its campaign management platform, putting OpenAI's ad inventory next to Google, Meta, Snap, TikTok, Amazon, Walmart, and Target in one console. The interesting part isn't the integration. It's what the integration reveals: ChatGPT advertising is a product-feed channel, and that makes your catalog the creative asset.
What actually happened
Per Pattern's announcement, the company now manages over $2 billion in annual ad spend and is extending that stack to ChatGPT for its brand partners. The capability builds on Pattern's acquisition of ROI Hunter, which handles product-level advertising and performance measurement. CEO Dave Wright framed it plainly: "The brands that win show up where their customers are and know what converts on each platform."
The mechanics matter more than the partnership. MarketingTech News reports that advertisers manage budgets, bids, creative, product feeds, and conversion settings through OpenAI's Ads Manager or its advertising API, buying on CPM or CPC. Merchants connect a catalog, and OpenAI generates ads for eligible items automatically. Ads render separately from the model's answer and don't influence it — OpenAI decides selection and delivery from conversation context, while advertisers supply contextual hints rather than keyword lists. Reporting comes back at campaign, ad-group, ad, and product level: impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average costs, attributed conversions.
Why ChatGPT Ads matter for your business
Read that list again and notice what's missing: keywords, headlines, ad copy. You don't write the ad. You supply a feed and a bid, and the model picks which of your SKUs answers the question someone just asked.
That's a different competence than running Google Search campaigns. It means the leverage moves upstream into your product data — titles, attributes, variants, availability, images, the specificity of your descriptions. A catalog with thin, inconsistent attributes doesn't produce mediocre ads in this channel. It produces no impressions, because the model can't match it to an intent.
The practical move for a small operator isn't hiring Pattern. It's auditing the feed you already send to Google Shopping and asking whether it would survive being the entire input to an ad. Most of the feeds we inherit wouldn't: category fields left at defaults, dimensions missing on half the SKUs, descriptions written for a human skimming a page rather than a system matching a request.
Fix the feed once and it pays across every channel that's moving this direction — Shopping, marketplace listings, AI assistants, and now paid placement inside ChatGPT. That's the rare piece of work with no vendor lock-in attached.
