Shopify Rollouts now schedule catalog and price changes

Shopify Rollouts can now schedule catalog changes and test catalogs against each other. How to stage Black Friday pricing, and why you test the rollback first.

On October 23, Shopify Rollouts started handling catalog changes. You can now set product availability and pricing per market ahead of a sale, pick the date and time it goes live, and ship it in the same rollout as your theme and checkout changes. Five weeks before Black Friday, that is the feature most stores needed. It also moves the risk. A scheduled price change that goes wrong at midnight goes wrong with nobody watching.

What actually happened

Per Shopify's changelog, Rollouts can now:

  • Schedule catalog changes. Turn catalogs on or off, or switch between existing catalogs, at a set date and time.
  • Test offers. Run experiments that compare one catalog against another on your online store.
  • Coordinate launches. Put catalog, theme and checkout changes in one rollout so they go live together.

Rollouts live under Markets > Rollouts in the admin. Per Shopify's help docs, there are three types. A Launch merges changes permanently. An Event publishes changes for a set period and then rolls them back. An Experiment compares a treatment against a control. A rollout can also carry discounts. The changelog does not list plan tiers or limits, so check the requirements page before you build your sale on it.

One more change took effect the same day. Starting October 23, Shopify Tax charges tax on US return shipping fees the same way it taxes other shipping. If you built a manual workaround for that, turn it off now or you will count the tax twice.

Why scheduled catalog changes matter for your business

The Event type is the real win. Most sale-weekend disasters are not the launch. They are the cleanup: a sale price left live on Tuesday, or a hidden product that never came back. An Event rollout puts the end date in the plan, not in someone's calendar.

Test the rollback, not just the launch. Build your BFCM rollout this week. Schedule a short Event on a low-traffic morning, let it expire, and check that prices, availability and discounts all returned. Do it with one market before you trust it with all of them.

Your apps may not know. Feeds, ERP syncs and repricing tools read prices from the catalog. When Shopify switches catalogs at 12:00 AM, check that your Google Merchant feed, marketplace listings and email blocks pick it up. If they cache, your ads will show last week's price.

Experiment with margin, not just conversion. A catalog test that lifts orders 8% at 15% off can still lose money. Measure profit per visitor.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify Rollouts can now schedule catalog changes and compare catalogs in experiments
  • Catalog, theme, checkout and discount changes can go live together in one rollout
  • Event rollouts end on their own, so the cleanup is part of the plan
  • Run a small Event this week and confirm everything rolls back
  • US return shipping fees are now taxed by Shopify Tax, so turn off any manual workaround
