Shopify UCP location search: AI agents can find your stores

Shopify's UCP 2026-08-25 lets AI shopping agents search a merchant's retail stores by city, distance and item. Your location data is now agent-facing.

AI shopping agents can now ask a Shopify store a very local question: which of your physical stores has this item, near me? Shopify's new UCP location search and lookup went live on October 21. If you run a shop with a counter and a till, your location settings just became something an agent reads.

What actually happened

Starting with UCP version 2026-08-25, Shopify storefronts expose two new capabilities over the storefront MCP endpoint (https://{storedomain}/api/ucp/mcp): dev.ucp.common.location.search and dev.ucp.common.location.lookup. Both are listed in the shop's discovery profile at /.well-known/ucp.

Per the changelog:

  • search_locations filters stores by name or city, by distance from a center point with a radius in meters, and by up to 10 product variant IDs. A store matches only if every variant is available there.
  • lookup_locations returns stores by ID, 10 per request.
  • Each result carries id, name, address and geo coordinates — if the merchant has set them.
  • Only shops with at least one active location enabled as a Physical storefront advertise the tools. No retail location, no capability.

Shopify is explicit about the limits. Item availability is not a stock count, a pickup promise or a reservation. Hours and amenities filters are not supported. Pickup checkout for a chosen location is not supported yet. And agents should only send a distance center the buyer chose to share — Shopify never infers it from IP.

Why it matters for your business

For a store with two or three physical locations, this is the agent version of "find a store near you." The difference: no customer reads your store locator page. An agent reads your Shopify location records and decides whether to send the buyer to you.

That makes boring admin data load-bearing. A location with a stale address, no coordinates, or the wrong Physical storefront setting is invisible or wrong to the agent. Inventory that is "available" at a store but not actually on the shelf becomes a bad recommendation with your name on it.

Do this now: open Settings → Locations, confirm every retail store has a correct address and is enabled as a physical storefront, and check that per-location inventory reflects reality. If you build agents or storefront integrations, declare both capabilities at 2026-08-25, call the tools only when the shop profile lists them, and confirm availability in cart before you tell a buyer an item is ready.

This is the same pattern we keep seeing in agentic commerce: the agent is only as good as the data you feed it.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify UCP 2026-08-25 adds location search and lookup for AI agents, effective October 21
  • Agents can filter your stores by city, distance and up to 10 variants that must all be available
  • Results use your Shopify location address and geo data — missing data means a missing or wrong answer
  • Availability is not a stock count or pickup promise; pickup checkout is not supported yet
  • Audit Settings → Locations and per-location inventory before agents start routing buyers

Running Shopify with physical stores? We clean up location and inventory data and wire it into agent-ready storefronts, so AI shopping agents send buyers to the right counter. See what we build or tell us about your stores.
