Visa, BILL, Billtrust Pilot: AI Agents Pay Supplier Invoices

Visa, BILL and Billtrust run a live pilot where an AI agent pays approved invoices through supplier portals with Trusted Agent Protocol. No shared logins.

Visa, BILL and Billtrust say they are running the first live pilot where an AI agent pays supplier invoices through supplier payment portals. The agent does not decide what to pay. It takes an invoice the buyer already approved, proves who it is with Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, and pays by card with a tokenized credential. That kills the worst step in accounts payable: someone logging into a vendor portal and typing card numbers by hand.

What actually happened

Per Visa's October 20 press release, also covered by Bloomberg:

  • BILL Payment Agent is registered through Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol and Agentic Directory. It pays supplier invoices by card on behalf of BILL customers, with tokenized credentials, following the buyer's approved payment instructions.
  • Billtrust, on the supplier side, uses the same protocol to recognize and authenticate the agent and let it into the supplier's payment portal. Visa says this replaces CAPTCHA and other bot checks, with no separate agent login.
  • Controls: each payment is tied to a specific invoice and an approved instruction. Buyers never share portal credentials. Both sides see authorization and completion. Suppliers accept agent payments under their existing acceptance policy and keep reconciliation data.
  • Status: live, processing end-to-end transactions between participating BILL buyers and Billtrust suppliers. Visa gave no transaction counts and no general availability date.

Why it matters for your business

The approval stays yours. That is the design, not a limitation. Per Visa's FAQ, the agent "does not make payment decisions." We draw the same line on every finance build: automate the clicking, keep a named human on the yes. If a vendor pitches you an AP agent that also picks what to pay, ask who carries the liability when it's wrong.

Shared portal logins are a real risk you can fix today. Most small finance teams keep a spreadsheet of vendor portal passwords, often with a company card saved inside. That is exactly what this pilot removes. You don't need to wait for it to ship. Move portal logins into a password manager with per-person access, and stop saving cards in supplier portals.

Card payment means fees for someone. The release pitches card acceptance for suppliers that only took ACH or check. Card is faster, but suppliers pay interchange. If you're a supplier, check whether agent-paid invoices arrive by card before you celebrate faster DSO.

It only works if both sides are on the network. This pilot needs BILL on the buyer side and Billtrust on the supplier side. If your vendors aren't on Billtrust, nothing changes for you yet.

Key takeaways

  • BILL's Payment Agent pays approved supplier invoices through Billtrust portals using Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol
  • The agent executes approved payments only; it does not choose what to pay
  • Tokenized credentials replace shared supplier-portal logins
  • Live pilot, no volume figures, no general availability date
  • Clean up your vendor portal password sheet now; don't wait for the pilot

Still paying vendors by logging into ten portals? We build AP automations where the agent does the data entry and a named person approves every dollar, on the finance stack you already run. See how we build or estimate the hours you'd get back.
