AI shoppers convert. Agent checkout is still under 1%.

Adobe says AI-referred retail traffic converts 42% better than other channels. Etsy says agentic traffic is under 1% of visits. Build for one, not the other.

There are two stories inside "AI is changing shopping" and merchants keep spending money on the wrong one. AI-referred traffic is real, large, and converting better than your paid search. AI agents completing checkout on their own is still a rounding error. A PYMNTS piece on August 7 put the two numbers next to each other, and the gap is the whole roadmap.

What actually happened

Adobe Analytics, working from more than a trillion visits to US retail sites, found AI-referred traffic to US retailers up 393% year over year in Q1 2026. Those visitors spent 48% more time on page and viewed 13% more pages. Revenue per visit ran about 37% higher than non-AI traffic. The conversion flip is the striking part: in March 2025 AI referrals converted roughly 38% worse than channels like paid search and email; by March 2026 they converted 42% better.

Now the other number. On Etsy's Q2 2026 earnings call, management said traffic from agentic commerce experiences is under 1% of overall traffic — high-intent, higher average order size, still under 1%. DoorDash's CEO described agentic order volume as low across the board. PYMNTS Intelligence surveys land in the same place: shoppers use AI to research constantly, but only about half say they would let an AI complete a purchase for them.

Two different behaviors, one label. A human who asked ChatGPT for a recommendation and then clicked through to your site is not an agent buying on your site. The first is happening at scale right now. The second is a pilot.

Why the AI-referred traffic gap matters for your business

The spend implication is blunt: fix your product data before you build an agent checkout.

The people arriving from AI answers are pre-qualified. They already got a recommendation. They are landing on your product page to confirm it — which is why they read longer and convert better. What kills that visit is the same boring stuff that has always killed it: thin specs, no stock signal, stale pricing, a size chart in a JPEG, a shipping estimate that appears three steps into checkout. Every one of those is a data problem, not an AI problem, and every one of them also determines whether the model recommended you in the first place. Structured catalogs read by AI search convert about twice as well as scraped pages. That is the highest-ROI work on this list.

Meanwhile, treat agentic checkout as an option you hold, not a project you fund. Under 1% of traffic does not justify rebuilding your payment flow. It does justify making sure your catalog, inventory, and pricing are available over a clean API — because that is the same work either way, and it is what makes agent checkout a two-week integration in 2027 instead of a replatform.

If you are picking one thing this quarter: make your product data correct, machine-readable, and yours. Everything downstream — AI search placement, agent checkout, whatever channel is next — reads from it.

Key takeaways

  • Adobe: AI-referred US retail traffic up 393% YoY in Q1 2026, ~37% higher revenue per visit
  • AI referrals went from converting ~38% worse (Mar 2025) to 42% better (Mar 2026)
  • Etsy: agentic commerce traffic still under 1% of visits, though higher intent and order size
  • About half of shoppers say they'd let an AI complete a purchase — the trust gap is at checkout
  • Fund product-data quality now; agent checkout is an integration you prepare for, not a rebuild

Your catalog is the asset every AI channel reads. We clean up product data, put it behind an API you own, and make it legible to AI search — so you're not rebuilding for the next channel. See what we've built for merchants or tell us where your product data lives.
