Amazon DSP now buys ChatGPT ads — the answer layer gets a buyer
Amazon Ads is piloting ChatGPT Ads inventory through Amazon DSP, US only, Delta Vacations first. What the managed-service route means for smaller advertisers.
On September 10, Amazon Ads and OpenAI opened a pilot that lets US advertisers buy ChatGPT Ads inventory through Amazon DSP. Delta Vacations is among the first testers. Amazon handles setup and optimization as a managed service; OpenAI's system still decides which ad appears against which conversation. The answer layer now has a second front door, and it is the one most mid-market brands already have a login for.
What actually happened
Per Search Engine Land, the pilot is US-only at launch and covers text and image units placed beneath ChatGPT responses, plus product-feed ads that generate creative from an advertiser's catalog. Everything carries a sponsored label. Inventory is available on both CPC and CPM. Reporting comes back aggregated — impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM, CPC — and Amazon's shopping and streaming signals can be layered against ChatGPT's conversational context.
Digiday frames it as Amazon extending its supply-chasing streak: it is buying access to somebody else's audience rather than growing its own surface. No pricing was disclosed, and no participant count beyond "a select group."
What was not published is the part worth circling. There is no stated cross-channel deduplication method and no attribution model for how a ChatGPT impression gets credit against an Amazon conversion. You are buying a surface whose measurement story is still being written.
Why the answer layer matters for your business
We have argued that your product feed is the ad channel since ChatGPT Ads opened, and this pilot sharpens it. Product-feed ads generate their own creative from your catalog. That means your titles, attributes, images and availability data are the ad, and a thin feed produces thin ads no matter what you bid.
Two practical reads for a smaller operator:
One, the managed-service route is not for you yet. DSP managed service is priced and staffed for brands with real budgets, and a pilot with named enterprise testers is not where a $4k/month advertiser gets attention. What it does tell you is that ChatGPT inventory is becoming plumbed into the same buying stacks as everything else. Direct self-serve remains the realistic path — ChatGPT Ads already sells self-serve in other markets at low daily minimums.
Two, fix the feed before you fund the channel. The work that makes answer-layer ads perform is identical to the work that makes you visible in organic AI answers: structured product data, accurate stock and pricing, specific attributes, clean images. That investment pays on both sides of the sponsored label, which is exactly why it is the one to make first.
And hold the measurement claims loosely. When a new surface launches without a published dedup method, early performance reports tend to flatter it — the same conversions counted twice, once by Amazon and once by whatever you were already running. Run it as an incrementality test with a holdout, or do not run it.
Key takeaways
- Amazon Ads opened a US-only pilot on September 10 selling ChatGPT Ads inventory through Amazon DSP
- Amazon manages setup and optimization; OpenAI still controls which ads serve and where
- Formats are text and image units below responses, plus product-feed ads generated from your catalog
- Buying is available on CPC and CPM; reporting is aggregated impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM, CPC
- No deduplication method or attribution model has been published - treat early performance numbers as unproven
- Managed DSP service targets large budgets; self-serve remains the realistic route for smaller advertisers
- Clean, structured product feed data drives both sponsored and organic answer-layer visibility - fix it first
The ad unit is built from your product data, so the product data is the campaign. We clean feeds, fix attribute coverage, and wire holdout tests so you can tell whether a new answer-layer channel actually added revenue.
